Abstract
FOSSETTEnslaved from birth at Monticello, in his youth Peter Fossett (1815-1901) witnessed Lafayette's 1824 visit to Thomas Jefferson.Fossett was sold in 1827, the year after Jefferson's death. He was emancipated in Henrico County in 1850, rejoined his family in Cincinnati later that year, and became a prominent caterer and Baptist clergyman. This portrait, likely taken shortly after Fossett's arrival in Cincinnati, is one of only a handful of photographs of people formerly enslaved at Monticello (Fossett's Account of Lafayette's Visit to Monticello and Charlottesville, [4-15 Nov. 1824], document 5 in a group of documents on Lafayette's Visit to Monticello and Charlottesville, 4-15 Nov. 1824).
