Abstract

This chapter analyses descriptive trends in state legislative elections over time within Alaska. Our focus lies in discerning any significant variability in the electoral landscape within the state after the implementation of the Top-4 system compared to decades prior. Our evaluation centers on several key metrics: the prevalence of unopposed races, the competitiveness of races, incumbent success rates, the correlation between votes and seats secured, differences in candidates' ideological positions, and voter turnout. Our findings indicate significant shifts induced by the Top-4 system in certain domains, while its influence remains negligible in others. We conclude with a discussion of the tradeoffs inherent in the Top-4 system as well as what they might mean for the future of elections in Alaska and elsewhere.
