49Rhetoric Enriched by Drama: The Declamations of Libanius
Abstract
The present paper discusses four declamations of Libanius — Decl. 6, in which Orestes defends himself in court against the charge of matricide; Decl. 31, where a miser is paradoxically ruined by finding a treasure; Decl. 32, in which a miser is torn between the love for his money and the love for a hetaira ; and Decl. 26, where a grouch complains of being driven to despair by his incessantly chattering wife. These examples show how in all of them Libanius extensively draws on Attic tragedy and comedy.
