Abstract

In the present paper I argue that Lucian, the multifarious satirical author of the second century AD, composed in fact one literary genre, which I denominate as the “para- genre”. Through the study of some of Lucian’s well-known writings, Podagra, The Praise of the Fly, The Consonants in Law, True Histories , I try to detect the main characteristics of this so-called new genre, and give a definition of Lucian’s literary technique.
