199Comic Adespota on Papyrus (1093, 1014 K.–A.): Menander, Philemon, Diphilus?
Abstract
Of the three great poets of Attic New Comedy, papyrus finds have restored plays (more or less whole, at least to a large extent) to us only in the case of Menander; there is, however, a considerable number of so-called Comic Adespota on papyrus, among which remnants of plays not only by Menander but also by Philemon and Diphilus may be hidden. The present article discusses two examples containing almost 200 (fr. 1014 K.–A.) and almost 400 lines (fr. 1093 K.–A.) respectively, points out some unique features these exhibit, and considers the possibility (already discussed in earlier scholarship) that these plays might be products of non-Menandrian authorship.
