Abstract

Karen Gloy. From Orality via Literacy to Artificial Intelligence. Würzburg: Könighausen & Neumann, 2025, 140 pp.. With her latest work, From Orality to Literacy to Artificial Intelligence, Karen Gloy, Professor Emerita of Philosophy and Intellectual History, presents a compact yet richly detailed essay that reflects on three fundamental forms of human communication and culture. In fewer than 140 pages and in paperback format, the three stages of civilization—orality, literacy, and artificial intelligence—are outlined and related to one another before ultimately suggesting a transhuman development, i.e., a human tendency toward self-destruction.
