Abstract

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have become an increasingly important benchmark for higher education institutions in assessing international visibility and academic performance. This study analyzes the sustainability research activities of Hungarian universities and their integration of the SDGs between 2019 and 2023. Using a quantitative and thematic approach, it examines publication indicators from Scopus and SciVal, highlighting differences among public, church-affiliated, and model-changing universities. Results show a significant increase in SDG-related publications, alongside marked differences in research focus and citation impact. The study identifies systemic challenges—such as resource constraints and incoherent institutional strategies—and offers recommendations to strengthen sustainability strategies. These findings may support the refinement of national university research policies and more effective implementation of the global SDG agenda.
