Reconsidering the Ontogeny of the Self-Reference Effect
Abstract
A recent study links the self-reference effect (SRE), the memory advantage for self-related information, to mirror self-recognition at 18 months. I argue this is a reorganization, not an onset, of self-processing. Early neural precursors and cross-cultural variability suggest a gradual, culturally situated view of self-development is needed.
