The Trilingual Gender Stereotypes Database (TGSD): Validated Contemporary Databases of Gender Stereotype Statements in English, Hebrew, and Arabic
Abstract
Gender-stereotype research often relies on language-specific materials and procedures that hinder generalization. We introduce the Trilingual Gender Stereotypes Database (TGSD) – a validated corpus of three independently developed databases of stereotype statements in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. Independent samples of native US-based English speakers (n = 95), Israeli Hebrew speakers (n = 440), and Israeli Arabic speakers (n = 125) rated how characteristic each statement was of “men” and of “women.” Stereotypicality was indexed by the absolute difference between congruent and incongruent gender ratings. Items showing large discrepancies between male and female raters were excluded, yielding balanced masculine, feminine, and neutral statements subsets within each language. One-way ANOVAs confirmed robust category effects on stereotypicality across languages and no residual main effects or interactions involving raters’ gender. The TGSD therefore offers a culture-sensitive, gender-balanced collection of stimuli sets with continuous stereotypicality scores, enabling precise tests of gender stereotypes across three linguistic contexts. All materials, anonymized data, and analysis code are publicly available to facilitate extension and future applications.
