Epistolary dialogue of Hryhorii Galagan and Osyp Bodianskyi
Abstract
The purpose of the work is to introduce into scientific circulation the letters exchanged between the historian Osyp Bodianskyi and public figure Hryhorii Galagan, as well as to contextualize the ideological, social and personal motives of their correspondence. A contextual study of these important historical sources proves that the end of the 1840s and the first half of the 1850s despite unfavourable political circumstances (the ultra-conservative regime in the Russian Empire at the end of the reign of Nicholas I) was a time of intense communication between Ukrainian patriots included in networks of multilateral mutual assistance, and they used the liberalization at the beginning of the reign of Alexander II, in particular the loosening of censorship restrictions, to activate the national cultural movement.
