Parasitic worms of European green frogs Pelophylax esculentus complex (Anura, Amphibia) in the Middle Volga region (Russia)
Abstract
The dataset includes 17191 records of helminth occurrences in green frogs (Pelophylax esculentus complex) from the Middle Volga Region (European Russia) and consists of 13634 records of amphibian parasites in Samara Region, 2083 records in the Republic of Mordovia, 284 in the Republic of Tatarstan, 273 in the Republic of Mari El, 199 in Saratov Region, 190 in Nizhny Novgorod Region, 171 in Penza Region, 124 in Orenburg Region, 74 in the Republic of Chuvashia, 99 in the Republic of Bashkortostan, 56 in Ryazan Region and 4 helminth records in green frogs from Ulyanovsk Region. The data on parasitic worms in the marsh frog Pelophylax ridibundus (Pallas, 1771), pool frog Pelophylax lessonae (Camerano, 1882) and edible frog Pelophylax kl. esculentus (Linnaeus, 1758) are presented. The dataset contains data on 43 species of parasitic worms including 29 species of trematodes, one cestode species, 11 species of nematodes and 2 species of acanthocephalans. Our studies of parasitic worms in amphibians were conducted using the method of complete helminthological necropsy. In total, the number of collected or recorded helminth specimens in our dataset was 283124. Our dataset summarizes helminth occurrences in three species of green frogs obtained by long-term field helminthological studies in the territory of the Middle Volga region over 28 years (1997–2025). Each occurrence record contains the helminth species name, basis of record, host species, site in host, location name, geographic coordinates, coordinate accuracy, date of the record and authors of the record and species identification. All occurrence records are georeferenced. The dataset is based on field studies of the staff of the Institute of Ecology of the Volga River basin of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Joint Directorate of the Mordovia State Nature Reserve and National Park “Smolny”.
