Effective cognitive behavioural and third-wave techniques in the therapeutic process of couples experiencing infertility
Abstract
Introduction and objective: This article discusses the issue of infertility and highlights the need for psychotherapeutic care for couples struggling with conception difficulties. Infertility is defined as a reproductive health disorder that prevents the achievement of a clinical pregnancy after 12 or more months of regular unprotected intercourse. It is estimated that infertility affects approximately 15% of couples of reproductive age, and its prevalence continues to rise. The inability to have a child is one of the fundamental human desires. Infertility negatively impacts the ability of couples to function in various aspects: psychologically, socially, physically, and financially. This is due to a feedback loop between psychological difficulties and infertility. Psychotherapeutic intervention is recommended to alleviate negative consequences such as anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, and lowered self-esteem. Materials and methods: The article identifies cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in combination with third-wave techniques as an effective treatment modality, supported by scientific research. CBT is a structured therapy with a defined duration and based on techniques with proven efficacy. Third-wave approaches enrich the CBT with elements focusing on mindfulness, psychological flexibility, acceptance, and conscious life direction. The article also provides an overview of possible therapeutic techniques that may prove effective in working with couples experiencing infertility. Results: Couples struggling with infertility face numerous psychological challenges. However, clear guidelines for mental health professionals in this field remain limited. Conclusions: CBT, complemented by third-wave elements, is a recommended form of support for couples facing infertility issues.
