«And laid Him in a manger» (Luke 2:7c). A Proposal for a New Theological Understanding of Mary’s Act
Abstract
Based on a analysis of φατνή and ἀνακλίνω in Luke 2:7C, a new interpretation of the laying of Jesus in a manger is proposed. In Luke 2:7C, Jesus is presented as the food that is in the manger and, at the same time, as someone who has taken a seat to eat. Both of these aspects in the life of Jesus are present only during the Last Supper. On this basis, we have come to the conclusion that the laying of the newborn Jesus in the manger is a prediction or reference to the institution of the Eucharist.
