Abstract

The possession of parish chapels by brotherhoods was the cause of various lawsuits in the ecclesiastical courts of Seville during the modern centuries. These lawsuits were due to the interest of the parish factories or third parties who wanted to dispose of this sacred space. In this paper we have analysed the conflicts that were aroused over this issue, dealing with their developments and consequences for the litigants. Thus, in order to have an adequate contextualization, it has been necessary to analyse the different ways in which a brotherhood could have the ownership of a chapel as the seat of its titulars, either by having the foundational ownership of the space or by cession of a faithful, this being perhaps the most frequent way in practice.
