Abstract

This study compiles a lexicon of Manner verbs (MV) in Chinese, a satellite-framed language (S-language), which encode three basic categories of human and/or animal motion: ‘walking’, ‘running’, and ‘jumping’. This lexicon is then compared with the corresponding MV lexicons in Spanish, a verb-framed language (v-language), and English, another S-language, as reported by Cifuentes Férez (2008). The aim is to investigate the relationship between the MV lexicon and the dominant pattern of motion event encoding across languages. From a quantitative perspective, the study shows that Chinese has a comparable number of MVS to English, and a significantly higher number than Spanish. Qualitatively, however, Chinese describes manner with a slightly higher degree of granularity than Spanish, yet notably lower than English. The research reveals that Chinese is an atypical s-language, with a capacity for expressing manner details that more closely aligns with V-languages.
