Abstract

cal University), the significance of the Department of Apparatus Engineering is usually presented in an extremely eclectic manner, without providing a comprehensive overview of its history. The existing literature on weapons schools in Udmurtia typically considers small arms schools and only briefly mentions missile weapons. Conversely, there is extensive literature on the history of rocket science in Udmurtia, but it typically focuses primarily on the manufacture and development of products; references to personnel training are sketchy, and research centers are generally not described at all. Thus, the history of the Department of Apparatus Engineering and its importance in personnel training and as a research center are currently absent from the literature. This article, based on documents from the archives of Izhevsk State Technical University and the collection of the Izhevsk Mechanical Institute in the Central State Archives of the Udmurt Republic, reconstructs the history of the Department of Apparatus Engineering and overlays this picture with the history of rocketry in Udmurtia. This helps us understand the types of products and the extent to which the department worked. The department was established in 1964, when production of the 8K14 missile began at the Votkinsk plant, specifically to provide engineering personnel for the Ural rocket industry. The year 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the department's first graduating class. During this time, its employees participated in the design, manufacture, development, and testing of virtually all missiles produced in Udmurtia. Thus, the Department of Apparatus Engineering has become not only a training ground for Udmurtia's rocket industry but also a major rocketry research center, primarily in the area of ground testing of high-altitude stages and the development of systems for mathematical modeling of rocket engines
