Rehabilitation of a Post-Mucormycosis Maxillary Defect With a Subperiosteal Implant-Supported Bar-Retained Obturator Overdenture: A Clinical Report
Abstract
Because severe soft and hard tissue loss is common after maxillary resection, traditional prostheses often have difficulty with retention and support. In recent years, advances in imaging and digital dentistry have led to a resurgence in popularity for subperiosteal implants. The present case report describes the treatment of a patient with type 2 diabetes who underwent a maxillectomy as a result of mucormycosis. The patient was treated with a custom-made subperiosteal implant–supported obturator overdenture prosthesis retained by a bar attachment. The subperiosteal implant and bar attachment were designed using computed tomography scans and 3-dimensional models, and manufactured via laser sintering. Using this innovative approach, the patient was successfully treated with high patient satisfaction and no complications at the 1-year follow-up.
