Role of Vitamin C Supplementation in Healing After Dental Implant Surgery: A Systematic Review
Abstract
ABSTRACT Background: Following dental implant surgery, an inflammatory response is triggered, resulting in the release of growth factors that attract osteoprogenitor cells to the implant site. These cells differentiate into osteoblasts, which facilitate bone formation at the implant surface. The healing process requires a specific environment supported by both local and systemic factors. For successful osseointegration and implant stability, careful attention must be paid to histological, dental, and systemic factors. Vitamin C has long been recognized for its role in wound healing and supporting immune function. Purpose: This systematic review aims to evaluate the role of Vitamin C in wound healing following dental implant surgery, to improve the healing environment and patient outcomes. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted on databases including Scopus, ResearchGate, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The review included six clinical studies and one retrospective study that examined the impact of Vitamin C supplementation on healing after dental extraction and dental implant placement. Hypothesis: Supplementing with Vitamin C after dental implant surgery may improve the likelihood of successful healing and osseointegration. Conclusion: As part of standard post-operative care for dental implants, it is recommended to supplement with 600 mg of Vitamin C per day for 10 days following surgery. This supplementation can help prevent infections and improve healing. Clinical Significance: The findings of this review highlight the potential benefits of Vitamin C supplementation in enhancing healing and osseointegration, ultimately contributing to the success of dental implant treatment.
