Lip Vibration and Technical Efficiency in French Horn Technique
Abstract
Lip vibration plays a central role in sound production and expressive control in brass performance, particularly in the French horn. This study investigates how specific characteristics of lip motion—such as vibratory stability, amplitude, and lip aperture—affect sound quality and technical control. Special attention is given to phenomena such as vibration collapse and its acoustic consequences. Using a combination of spectral analysis, high-speed video observation, and artificial intelligence tools, we examine the correlation between lip behavior and sound output. The results reveal key relationships between vibratory consistency and spectral richness, contributing to a deeper understanding of how subtle variations in lip mechanics impact tone production. This interdisciplinary approach—bridging acoustic science, digital signal processing, and performance practice—offers valuable insights for pedagogical applications and the technical optimization of brass performance.
