Abstract

Abstract Purpose: This research investigates the alignment of the sustainability dimensions of the B3 Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) - the main stock exchange in Brazil - with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The aim was to determine whether the 17 SDGs are incorporated within the 5 Dimensions of the ISE Questionnaire established by B3. Originality/value: This study contributes to the literature by offering evidence that elucidates stakeholder and agency theories, thus addressing the issue of information asymmetry between stakeholders and the public regarding companies’ sustainable practices and their alignment with the SDGs. Design/method/approach: We conducted a documentary study employing content analysis. This involved reviewing documents related to the SDGs from the United Nations website and analyzing 259 questionnaires, methodologies, and other relevant materials available on the B3 website, which assess the five ISE’s sustainability dimensions. We predetermined analytical categories based on the research goals and selected data. We carried out a documentary research from March to June 2022. Findings: Findings indicate that the ISE_B3’s sustainability dimensions are more closely aligned with specific SDGs such as Climate Action, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Partnerships for the Goals, Good Health and Well-being, Gender Equality, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Reduced Inequalities. Conversely, there was a weaker alignment with goals related to No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Quality Education, Life Below Water, and Life on Land.
