Economic violence against women committed by intimate partners: a population-based study
Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the factors associated with economic violence against women committed by intimate partners between 2016 and 2022 in Brazil. Method: Population-based study using data on economic violence from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). Sociodemographic variables of the women and characteristics of the intimate partnership and of the violence were analyzed, fitting a multiple Poisson regression model. Results: The occurrence of economic violence was increased by: black, brown, or yellow skin color, lower educational attainment, disability of the victim, sex of the perpetrator, and recurrence of the violence. The factors associated with a lower occurrence of economic violence were: being older and married/in a consensual union; cases motivated by religious intolerance, generational conflict, homelessness, disability, or other specific causes; and episodes occurring in schools, public roads, or establishments such as bars. Conclusion: The data demonstrate the need to strengthen public policies aimed at the prevention, identification, and confrontation of economic violence in the context of intimate partnerships.
