Alien invader or latent species revived by environmental change?—the jury is still deliberating
Abstract
Before announcing the sudden appearance of a diatom species as an alien invader, consider that the species may have been already present at that location, but latent—in such small numbers as to evade detection by routine sampling—until it flourished in response to climate change or some other environmental disturbance and became visible to the unaided eye or appeared in monitoring collections.
