Abstract

This chapter highlights preservice teachers’ perceived opportunities to learn mathematics education and to learn from their practicum in Swedish teacher education. The study reports on the open-ended questions of a survey conducted in the spring of 2020. The responses show that the students’ view of mathematics teaching changed during their education towards a more learning-centred perspective. They express a greater focus on involving learners; that is, offering learners ways to discover mathematics and to work more with mathematical problem-solving. Further, there are students who feel that what they have been offered to learn about assessment is not implementable in their teaching. The results also suggest that some students experience a lack of coherence between their university-based education and their practice-based education when it comes to planning, assessment and other aspects of teaching mathematics.
