Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss the connection between mathematics teacher education in Sweden and research, something that concerns both teacher educators and preservice teachers as well as their future learners. Research on teacher education is needed, among other things, to be able to change and develop teacher education and to find out how it works. Research in teacher education is required to ensure quality and to ensure that education is based on research and rests on a scientific foundation. Research on mathematics teacher education has been sparse and the use of research in teacher education, which has been a formal requirement since 1977, has developed slowly. While we highlight positive changes that have occurred, we also demonstrate that to raise the quality of teacher education and to ensure equal schooling for all, more of both types of research is necessary.
