Navigating the Chaos on Two Wheels: An Autistic Perspective on Cycling
Abstract
This is an accepted article with a DOI pre-assigned that is not yet published.Cycling is often seen as an accessible and simple mode of tranportation. For autistic individuals, it can be overwhelming due to sensory overload and complex urban environments. This reflection explores how cycling in busy environments, with unclear signage or the urge to make rapid decisions can create significant barriers for neurodivergent cyclists. By recognizing these sensory and cognitive challenges - not just physical ones – cycling infrastructure can potentially serve everyone in the future. Inclusive design benefits all users, making active travel safer, more comfortable, and genuinely accessible for neurodivergent individuals.
