Our Tower Wordless [Public Research Exhibition at Discover Children’s Story Centre, London]
Abstract
The research shown here was publicly exhibited as a large‑scale installation at the Discover Children’s Story Centre, London, August 2022. Using traditional qualitative research methods, I gathered responses from groups of children who participated in the project. Through workshops and interviews, I explored how they engaged with a pictorial text presented in an unconventional spatially designed format—different from a standard picturebook, though using similar illustrative material. The question prompts encouraged the children to think metacognitively about how they interpreted the images, and how they could work together to build a story. This stage of my research applied elements of an emerging theoretical model to a major practical output. Its aim was to see whether children would read the installation as a narrative text, and if so, which design features helped them to interpret and discuss the story in new ways, through a group reading experience.Johnson, R.
