Abstract

The Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration (formerly the Kate Greenaway Medal) is a major UK award, founded in 1955, that celebrates outstanding illustration in books for children and young people. Judged each year by librarians, it recognises artists whose work creates an exceptional visual reading experience, often highlighting the strong interplay between text and illustration. Our Tower was created during my doctoral research and was shaped by the theories underpinning that work. Its imagery draws on unusual combinations of comics and picturebook conventions. The project was also used in early studies with young people, exploring how traditional illustrated formats could be reimagined as unconventional, spatially designed reading experiences.https://carnegies.co.uk/illustration-nominated-titles-2023/Richard Johnson is identified as the copyright owner of this work.
