Abstract

Abstract: Commissioned by the Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL) at Stockholm University, two semi-structured focus group interviews were carried out with students from the department of archaeology and classical studies as well as the department of sociology. The purpose was to investigate student perspectives on artificial intelligence and accessibility in higher education. The results indicate that AI is widely used as support in students’ academic work, for instance in literature searches, conceptual understanding, and language processing. Yet its use is often perceived as existing within an ethical grey area. Students request clearer guidelines and support from the university, while simultaneously regarding AI as a natural and expected part of higher education, both now and in the future. Regarding accessibility, the concept is frequently understood as synonymous with disability study support. Students describe shortcomings in system flexibility, teaching practices based on the assumption of a “norm student,” and a heavy burden of individual responsibility. At the same time, they emphasise the importance of clearer structure, improved communication, and increased understanding among teachers as key conditions for a more accessible learning environment.
