Abstract

Introduction: The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to the adoption of strict measures to combat the virus, particularly social isolation. This situation significantly affected the population's mental health and increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyze the feelings and self-care strategies adopted during social isolation in the context of COVID-19 in 2020, based on the participants' gender. Method: This quantitative, descriptive, and exploratory survey was conducted with 1,128 adult participants of both genders from different cities and countries. A questionnaire was used to assess sociodemographic information, feelings, and self-care strategies. Results: Females reported experiencing more adverse feelings of isolation, such as fear, sadness, and nervousness. However, regarding emotional self-care strategies, both genders reported using similar means. Conclusion: In this sense, the research has social implications for social assistance to women as a measure to consider strategies to mitigate the effects of the emotions experienced during the pandemic.
