Abstract

This study demonstrates the functional advantages of reaction-sintered diamond-silicon carbide (diamond‒SiC) ceramics for armor applications compared to other low-density materials based on silicon carbide (SiC), boron carbide (B4C), and alumina (Al2O3). The ballistic properties of diamond‒ SiC ceramics were experimentally evaluated according to protection class Br5 using prototype armor panels consisting of 8-mm-thick ceramic plates bonded to a 10-mm-thick ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene flexible backing. Ballistic testing confirmed complete penetration resistance against SVD rifle rounds, including armor-piercing incendiary (API) projectiles. Ill. 4. Ref. 24. Tab. 3.
