TERRITORIAL FEATURES OF MANGANESE DISTRIBUTION IN ECOSYSTEMS OF SMALL RIVERS OF THE SOUTHERN URALS
Abstract
The content of soluble forms and the gross content of manganese in water, bottom sediments, and floodplain soils of small rivers in the Southern Urals were studied. Data on the manganese behavior in river ecosystems due to oxidation-reduction conditions in the water body were summarized. The contribution of anthropogenic and natural processes to the level of water bodies manganese pollution was assessed. It has been revealed that the main part of manganese in water is formed due to intra-water processes. The manganese removal mechanisms from water are shown, namely: adsorption on suspended solids followed by oxidation and precipitation, as well as the mechanisms of manganese reduction and entry into water from bottom sediments. It is shown that the main manganese cycle occurs inside the bottom sediments, the main contribution to water pollution by manganese is made by bottom sediments. A high probability of manganese entering the water from floodplain soils during the flood period is revealed.
