Fluid Dispensing on 2S Modules in the CMS Phase2 Upgrade
Abstract
The upcoming High-Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HLLHC) presents unprecedented challenges for the CMS experiment, necessitating signi}cant detector upgrades. A critical component of this ezort is the Phase-2 Tracker Upgrade, which includes the deployment of 2S silicon strip detector modules for precise charged particle tracking. The mechanical stability and electrical performance of these modules rely on highly controlled adhesive applications during assembly. This thesis focuses on the optimization of ~uid dispensing processes for 2S module construction. A detailed analysis of existing dispensing methods reveals limitations in precision and reproducibility, particularly in Kapton strip gluing and wire bond encapsulation. To address these challenges, extensive hardware evaluations were conducted, leading to re}nements in cartridge selection, tip geometries, and dispensing parameters. Additionally, a custom dispensing device was designed, constructed, and integrated into the assembly work~ow to improve accuracy and reliability. Experimental validation demonstrated substantial improvements in dispensing consistency, reducing adhesive mass variations and enhancing process ef- }ciency. These }ndings contribute to the re}nement of module production techniques, ensuring the high-quality assembly of tracking detectors essential for the success of the CMS Phase-2 Upgrade.
