Abstract

This review analyzes Andrés Mejía Vergnaud’s La ruta del pragmatismo. La filosofía de lo posible, lo concreto y lo que funciona (2025) as a proposal for the practical application of pragmatism in its Jamesian vein. After historically situating the work at the crossroads between Peirce and James, the text demonstrates how Mejía defends a conception oriented toward action, negotiation, and efficacy in fields such as ethics, justice, capitalism, and governance. The review raises three primary objections: the potential confusion between practical normativity and pragmatic functionality; the risk of reducing truth and knowledge to mere operativity—considering Susan Haack’s ethics of the intellect—; and the circularity of a pragmatism that tends to reinterpret every successful decision as “pragmatic.” It concludes that, despite these tensions, the book constitutes a provocative intervention in contemporary debates on practical rationality and public philosophy.
