Interdisciplinary Digital Preservation of Hui-Style Architectural Decorative Carvings: An Integrated Approach Using 3D Laser Scanning and Digital Modeling
Abstract
This study originates from the practical challenges faced in the contemporary preservation and transmission of Huipai architectural decorative carvings. The “Three Huizhou Carvings,” including wood, brick, and stone carvings, are increasingly threatened by long-term natural weathering, tourism-driven commercialization, and the gradual loss of traditional restoration craftsmanship, which together hinder high-precision documentation and sustainable conservation. The purpose of this study is to establish a digital preservation and transmission framework for Huipai architectural decorative carvings by integrating 3D laser scanning technology and digital modeling techniques. Accordingly, this paper adopts a digital heritage perspective and employs a combined methodology consisting of literature analysis, technical simulation, and comparative case studies. The research findings and contents are summarized as follows. First, 3D laser scanning technology enables non-contact, high-precision acquisition of geometric and surface data from Huizhou carving components, ensuring accurate documentation of original forms and fine details. Second, digital modeling techniques based on scanned data support model reconstruction, detailed analysis, and application-oriented extension, providing technical support for exhibition, education, and the preservation of restoration-related knowledge. Based on these findings, this study argues that an integrated digital preservation approach combining 3D laser scanning and digital modeling contributes to the sustainable conservation of Huipai architectural decorative carvings and offers a valuable reference for interdisciplinary research in digital heritage and traditional architectural art.
