Abstract

This article analyses the conflicts that arose between consumers and suppliers of drinking water in Madrid in the first third of the 20th century. During this period, the city experienced a significant demographic increase, while the water supply was progressively improved and expanded to meet the growing demand for water. In particular, the research addresses the conflicts that arose over the price of water, its quality and potability, and the supply and quantity available. These conflicts arose not only between suppliers and consumers, but also between suppliers and consumers. The paper aims to contribute to explaining the obstacles that hindered the achievement of universal water supply at home in Spain, a goal that was considered realistic during this period.
