Abstract

This writing offers an interpretation of how writer José Saramago portrays God and the devil in his Christian novels, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ and Cain. By blurring the traditional relationship between these figures, Saramago presents a liberating proposal for contemporary audiences. For this purpose, research is carried out on aspects of modernity, humanism and the relationship that these have with Christian beliefs.
