Abstract

The second half of the 19th century saw the emergence of musical lexicography in Spain, a trend that saw up to six dictionaries published over the course of 50 years (Orellana Calderón, 2019, p. 176; Quilis Merín, 2019, p. 49). However, interest in this technical vocabulary had already manifested itself in the first half of the century, albeit in other formats. Thus, the analysis of musical technical terms had been carried out in the form of appendices attached to larger theoretical treatises. Apart from the brief review presented by Subirá (1970), these hidden glossaries have received little attention. For this reason, we propose to analyze one of the earliest examples of musical lexicography in Spanish, the small “Dictionary” that appears at the end of Juan Bautista Roca y Bisbal's Gramática musical (1837), with the aim of better understanding the beginnings of the tradition of music dictionaries and making a small contribution to the history of technical lexicography.
