Research Instruments and Protocol for Artificial Intelligence in Emergency Dispatch Centers: Practitioner Insights on Current Use and Future Directions
Abstract
In this depository are the research instruments and protocol (e.g., interview questions, information, and key definitions) for a project. Please see the data documentation file for full information. Below is an overview of the project: Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a potential tool to support emergency dispatch operations and Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). However, limited research has examined practitioner perspectives regarding AI implementation, opportunities, barriers, and future applications within emergency dispatch systems. This study seeks to better understand how emergency communication professionals perceive AI and identify factors that may influence its adoption. Study Objectives: - Explore practitioner sentiments toward AI in emergency dispatch systems. - Identify perceived opportunities and barriers to implementation. - Examine considerations for responsible and effective AI integration. This study employed a qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews. Participants were recruited from Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) and 9-1-1 dispatch centers throughout Michigan. Total participants: 19 Roles: County coordinators and directors Location: Michigan Interviews were conducted virtually and recorded with participant consent. Recordings were subsequently transcribed for analysis.
