Introducing ‘Hyp-Sup’: A Hypnosis-Informed Supervision Tool for Enhancing Reflective Practice
Abstract
Clinical supervision is a cornerstone of psychological practice, providing a structured space for reflection, learning, and professional development. Yet supervision often lacks innovative tools that reliably deepen reflective processes. This article introduces Hyp-Sup - a hypnosis-informed supervision tool that adapts hypnotic principles such as focused attention, utilisation, and indirect suggestion into the supervisory context. It extends supervision frameworks by translating hypnotic mechanisms into structured reflective practice that fosters dialogue, broadens perspective, and mobilises supervisees’ internal resources. Hyp-Sup is presented as a flexible framework rather than a rigid method, guiding supervisors to help supervisees access fresh perspectives, reframe challenges, and discover new strategies through collaboration and the supervisee’s own language and strengths. Anecdotal feedback from peer trials illustrates how Hyp-Sup may enhance reflection and insight. As a conceptual contribution, Hyp-Sup highlights the potential of hypnosis-informed approaches to enrich reflective practice across settings, offering a foundation for future research examining its feasibility, impact, and integration into evidence-based supervision models.
