Memory for Degraded Speech
Abstract
The present study will provide a conceptual replication of Rabbitt (1966), investigating the impact of speech in noise on subsequent recognition memory performance. Unlike Rabbitt, we will employ a within-participant design and use both words and sentences as stimuli, allowing us to manipulate the contextual richness of speech. We will also examine the impact of two levels of multi-talker babble noise, with an easier (+7 dB) and a more challenging (+1 dB) SNR condition, alongside a clear speech control condition. Between encoding and recognition portions, participants will complete Raven's Advanced Progressive matrices, primarily as a distractor task, but also as a measure of fluid intelligence.
