Reality TV Consumption and Attitudes about Dating and Relationships
Abstract
This study examines the association between the consumption of reality dating shows and young adults’ agreement with sexualized and gender-specific dating and relationship attitudes. Based on Cultivation Theory and Sexual Script Theory, it hypothesizes that higher exposure to reality dating formats is associated with stronger endorsement of stereotypical relationship patterns. Using a quantitative cross-sectional online survey of young adults aged 18 to 29 who consume reality dating shows, the study further tests whether identification with protagonists of the shows, perceived credibility, and relationship status moderate these associations.
