Preparing the Maternity Workforce to Care for Women Affected by Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Review of Educational Interventions
Abstract
Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) affects over 200 million women and girls globally and is increasingly encountered in obstetric practice in high-income countries due to migration. Women affected by FGM/C may face unique obstetric complications and psychosocial challenges during pregnancy and childbirth. Health professionals frequently report limited training, low confidence, and uncertainty regarding culturally sensitive, evidence-based clinical management of FGM/C in maternity care. Educational interventions targeting clinicians have been developed across diverse settings; however, the extent, content, and effectiveness of these interventions have not been comprehensively mapped. A rapid scoping review is an appropriate methodology to systematically identify, describe, and synthesize the available evidence while accommodating time and resource constraints. The objective of this rapid scoping review is to map and describe existing educational interventions aimed at improving health professionals’ knowledge, attitudes, confidence, and clinical skills in providing care for women affected by FGM/C during pregnancy and childbirth.
