Nothing About Us Without Us: Centering Lived Experience as the AMPD Moves Forward
Abstract
This commentary examines the role of lived experience perspectives in evaluating and refining the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) as it moves toward potential inclusion in the main section of the DSM. Drawing on existing empirical and theoretical literature, the project highlights gaps in patient- and family-centered research, with particular attention to diagnostic language, trait terminology, and the communication of personality functioning. The goal is to identify research priorities and conceptual considerations that may enhance both the scientific rigor and person-centeredness of personality disorder nosology by integrating the voices of those most directly affected by diagnostic practices.
