Cognitive Drift and Co-Cognition Framework Guides
Abstract
This component contains the core guides for the Cognitive Drift and Co-Cognition framework within the broader Reality Drift project. The materials examine how cognition changes when thinking becomes increasingly mediated by artificial intelligence, external memory, recursive feedback, compressed representations, and distributed information systems. They focus on the shift from cognition as an individual process toward co-cognition, where human judgment, memory, interpretation, and reasoning are increasingly shaped through ongoing interaction with external tools and models. The collection includes an overview of the Co-Cognition framework, an introduction to Co-Cognition, a paper connecting Co-Cognition to Cognitive Drift, and a field guide to AI-mediated cognition. Together, these documents explore how externalized cognition can expand human capability while also introducing new forms of dependency, compression, semantic loss, and recursive feedback. Within the Reality Drift framework, this component focuses on the cognitive layer: how mediated systems reshape attention, memory, abstraction, interpretation, and the conditions under which thought remains grounded. This component serves as the canonical reference set for the Cognitive Drift and Co-Cognition guides unless superseded by a later version.
