Commercial Continuous Glucose Monitoring as a Surrogate for Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring among Individuals with Normoglycemia
Abstract
Individuals with normoglycemia have recently used commercial continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for personal health, athletics, and nutrition. However, it is unclear how these systems perform against established glucose monitoring methods, especially in the periods surrounding beverage and/or food consumption and other challenging conditions such as athletics. These conditions are considered challenging for CGMs since CGM systems measure glucose in interstitial fluid instead of blood, possibly causing delayed or incorrect values, especially during rapid glucose change. We will analyze data from participants with normoglycemia over 2-3 weeks, especially focusing on comparison with capillary glucose (finger stick) monitoring, in sessions where participants either have a placebo beverage (stevia) and rest, placebo beverage and exercise, sugar-sweetened beverage and rest, or sugar-sweetened beverage and exercise (hereinafter PR, PE, SR, SE respectively).
