Abstract

Lonely River is written in the style of classical Chinese prose, tracing the unresolved grief over the loss of Outer Manchuria and other territories ceded more than a century ago. Beginning with the late‑Qing treaties signed under national weakness, the essay contrasts past constraints of “inability” with the present condition of national strength, in which the recovery of historical lands is neither pursued nor publicly discussed. The author highlights how contemporary silence—despite geopolitical opportunities—erodes collective resolve and historical consciousness. By recalling earlier generations who still voiced the call to reclaim lost territories, the essay urges readers to confront historical humiliation, preserve national spirit, and recognize that while land may be lost for a time, the will to restore dignity must not fade across generations.【《孤影長河》以古文筆法書寫外東北等失地久不復之痛,藉蒼涼筆勢追索百餘年來山河殘缺的歷史記憶。
