Abstract

This document provides a registration of a survey experiment on policy backlash - whether individuals react against changes in a policy status quo. The study focuses on the question of same sex marriage in Brazil. Survey respondents are randomly assigned to one of three groups. All groups are reminded of the legal status of same sex marriage. A treatment group that we call, ``enshrine'', is assigned to also learn that a proposed bill would codify same sex marriage into law. A second treatment group, that we call ``ban'', is assigned to also learn that a proposed bill would ban same sex marriage. The control group receives no additional information. Dependent variables include attitudes toward same sex marriage, the importance of the issue, and whether the issue affects behavior.
