Abstract

Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to understand how the international peer-reviewed literature constructs students’ struggles in placements that do not go to plan, in order to enhance pre-registration student learning in allied health clinical education. Introduction: Clinical education is an essential part of learning to become an allied health professional. There is a body of literature around clinical education and part of that body of work relates to placements that do not go to plan: situations where the outcome may be a failed placement or, at a minimum, clinical placements experiences that are less than satisfactory for stakeholders. Inclusion criteria: Peer reviewed journal articles published in English language covering the following domains will be included: Participants - Pre-registration health professional students and/or educators from allied health involved in placements that do not go to plan; Concept – placements that do not go to plan (e.g. difficult, challenging, underperformance, struggle, failure); Context - Pre-registration allied health professional clinical education Methods: The search was developed by the research team using three main PCC concepts: students (allied health), placements that do not go to plan (i.e. failure, underperformance and similar) and clinical education and optimised in CINAHL Complete. This strategy was adapted for Ovide MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, ERIC and PsycINFO. Citation searching will be employed on included studies to ensure all relevant publications have been captured.
