Circadian Timing of Prebiotic Administration and Sleep Regulation: A Scoping Review
Abstract
This scoping review examines the intersection of chronobiology, gut microbiome, and sleep neuroscience, specifically investigating whether the circadian timing of prebiotic administration influences microbial metabolite production and sleep regulation parameters. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we will systematically map existing evidence and identify critical knowledge gaps in this emerging field. The review aims to establish whether time-of-day administration of prebiotics (inulin, FOS, GOS) affects outcomes such as sleep latency, architecture, and quality through modulation of short-chain fatty acids and other gut-derived metabolites. This protocol has been prospectively registered to ensure transparency and methodological rigor.
