Abstract

This study investigates how bilingual speakers select words during language production, focusing on whether they prioritize more accurate, message-aligned words or more accessible, high-frequency alternatives. We predict two primary outcomes: (H1) bilingual speakers will show a larger frequency effect in their word choices compared to monolinguals, reflecting greater reliance on more accessible lexical items; and (H2) both groups will show a frequency effect overall, replicating Koranda et al.’s (2022) original findings. Exploratory analyses will examine whether individual differences in language proficiency and language background further modulate the strength of this bias.
